In 1962, the first Wal-Mart opened up in Rogers, Arkansas. 
 
The Super Market Is Born
 

Today, it is the world's largest retailer, and biggest single employer in the world. But back in 1962, it was one, lonely little fledgling store of brothers Sam and Bud Walton, who opened their doors on the philosophy of "low prices every day".

In 2005, Wal-Mart reported record revenues of $312.4 billion with net profits of $11.2 billion, benefits of a 3% rise in U.S. sales at their supermarket/department store chain, as well as the company's Sam's Club outlets.

From their humble beginnings in Rogers, AR, the company prospered, experiencing a boom in stores to 24 in under two years and sales of $12 million. By 1969 the Wal-Mart chain had spread beyond the borders of Arkansas, but when it came to opening its first distribution center in 1970, that was built in Bentonville, AR where corporate headquarters remain to this day.

Starting life as a general merchandise department store, Wal-Mart expanded its horizons and business opportunities by encompassing a grocery supermarket under the same roof, thus ensuring that customers could really do it all under one roof.
