| Thou Art Dog
Dog has been Man's best friend since...well, since they first became friends, likely when a wolf overcame his fear of the strange upright creature and sought out his companionship and scraps from the newly discovered fire used for cooking.
History records numerous remarkable tales of heroism by our canine companions, and stories that tug at the heartstrings as they recount dog's devotion to Man and vice-versa. Dogs have been immortalized in nearly every art form there is, and now that art has found a home in one place, a dog art museum in St. Louis, Missouri, which belongs to the American Kennel Club.
The museum is 14,000 sq. ft., part of which includes the historic Jarville House built in 1853. Inside, hanging, sitting, and heeling, are some of the finest examples of dog art in the world, including paintings, sculptures, porcelains, and others.
Among the permanent exhibits are the works of Edward Landseer (1802-1873) such as his famous Deerhound and Recumbent Foxhound, as well as later paintings of terriers by renowned artist Maud Earl (1864-1943).
Today, the AKC Museum maintains a registry of dog artists, in case you want to have your pooch's portrait painted. They hold an annual exhibition of said artists, by invitation only, which paws-atively begs for the attention of dog lovers.
