Actor Bruce Willis's real name is Walter.

Wall to Wall Walters

According to which royalty, pop star or movie actors/actresses are popular in a given year, there instantly appears a crop of babies with the same name. Then some of those names seem to fade into oblivion. Take the name Walter, for instance. Once upon a time, it was a great name, bestowed on the daring and distinguished. For example, consider these men from the past and present.

Sir Walter Raleigh- (1552-1618) Adventurer, poet, historian, Sir Walter was a true Renaissance man, and a favorite at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. His services over the years included foiling the plot that would have put Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne, and which resulted in her execution. When Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, and Mary's son James I succeeded to the throne, Raleigh was accused of plotting against the throne and tossed into the Tower of London, where he was executed in 1618. According to custom, his head was embalmed and presented to his wife, who carried it with her for 29 years until her own death. The head was finally buried with their son, Carew, in a grave next to his father.

Walt Disney- (1901-1966) A creative entertainment genius, arguably the most influential pioneer in cartoon/animation movies and mogul of the family fun empire. But for all his creativity, his first company went belly up. Then as the creator and first voice of a mouse in shorts, he had success by the tail, and it dropped him flat on his face again, when Bambi, Fantasia, and Pinocchio failed in their initial release. But he soldiered on, like many a genius, a sometimes temperamental man, who did not forgive, easily. A 1941 strike by Disney Studio employees is cited as the reason Walt appeared before a 1947 Un-American Activities Hearing, and named several of his staff as Communist sympathizers.

Bruce Willis- (1955- ) Why is he included here, you ask? Because his real name is Walter Bruce Willis. But apparently, the "Walter" part was not considered as appealing to potential fans. So far, Mr. Willis has not lost his head, just his hair. And despite his legendary temper tantrums on the set of "Moonlighting", he too has gone on to commercial success.
