Anti-American demonstrators protesting in Bangladesh after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks carried posters of Osama bin Laden sitting alongside Bert, a beloved Sesame Street Muppet character.

Muppet Strikes Terror in the Hearts of Evil Men

You see some strange things when people start taking offense at each other's politics and beliefs, but nothing stranger than the juxtaposition of terrorist Osama Bin Laden and Bert, the Muppet character from Sesame Street.

In October of 2001, demonstrators in Bangladesh, appeared on the streets in the hundreds, carrying a montage-like poster that showed Bert the Muppet, glaring over the shoulder of Bin Laden.

Granted, Bert is a grump, but what was he doing in such poor company? The first suspect was Dino Ignacio, who for several years kept a prank site called "Bert is Evil" in which by various humorous means, he tried to show that the puppet character was just plain bad. But Ignacio was no longer updating his site, and denied any association with the image, which he conjectured, may have been taken from sites belonging to some of his devotees, who had carried on the running joke about Bert.

Sesame Workshop Producers were furious about the use of their family-oriented character for such a purpose. The hunt was on for the perpetrator. Mostafa Kamal, the production manager for Azad Products, in Daka, Bangladesh, said that all the images on the poster had been taken from the Internet, in a not very refined search for pictures of Bin Laden. No one had checked the settings of the photos. They just put them into the montage, and ran off about 2,000 copies that were snapped up by the demonstrators protesting the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Once they were informed of Bert's role for children, they agreed to take that image out of the next printing.
