| Whatever Happened To Actor Tom Wopat
(Luke Duke from The Dukes of Hazzard)?
Actor Tom Wopat was born on September 9,
1951 in Lodi, Wisconsin. By the time Wopat was 12 years-old, he was
already singing and dancing in school musicals. He had (and still
does) such a passion for music that he enrolled in the University of Madison
to study music.
He took a small break from university to
become a lead singer of his own rock bank, but later returned to school
and began his career as an actor in campus productions.
Wopat really came to public attention in
the late 1970's as Luke Duke in the highly popular television series "The
Dukes of Hazzard."
Wopat was enjoying Broadway success before
the role of Luke Duke came along. He auditioned for the role in New
York and ten days later he was in Georgia for filming.
He enjoyed great success with the show
that lasted from 1978 to 1985. Also during the time series was on
the air, Wopat continued with his musical talents, touring the country
with his then-band, The North Hollywood All-Stars.
Wopat also enjoyed much success as a country
singer. He produced a number of albums and enjoyed two Top 20 country
hits (The Rock and Roll of Love and Susannah), a Top 5 country video A
Little Bit Closer.
What has he been up to since "The Dukes
of Hazzard" went of the air?
Wopat continued to develop his musical
talents and also returned to the Broadway stage. He performed in
plays such as Olympus On My Mind, City of Angels and Guys and Dolls.
Occasionally, Wopat also sang Broadway
show tunes with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic
at the Hollywood Bowl.
He was still involved with television at
the same time. He reunited with actor John Schneider (Bo Duke) for
the CBS made-for-tv move "Christmas Comes To Willow Creek" in 1987.
He also starred in two drama series Blue Skies (1988) and Peaceable Kingdom
(1989).
Once again Wopat was in the spotlight when
he got a role on the popular CBS sitcom "Cybill," starring actress Cybill
Shepard in 1995. Although Wopat had never acted in a sitcom before,
he was quick to take the opportunity. He starred as Jeff Robbins
in the show until is was cancelled at the end of 1998.
After the series went off the air, Wopat
returned to the music studio and recorded his latest album "The Still of
the Night" in 2000. Wopat now spends most of his time touring and
has a number of dates set for 2003 with stops in various parts of the USA. |
