| Whatever Happened To Singer Jody Watley?
Born on January 30, 1959, Jody Watley began
her successful career as a professional dancer in the popular 70's dance
show "Soul Train." But she got her stardom when she emerged in 1987
as a sensational singing star.
In 1987, Watley's debut single, "Looking
For a New Love," was a smash hit along with other singles such as "Don't
You Want Me", "Still A Thrill", which showcased Jody's deep vocal abilities,
"Some Kind Of Lover" and "Most Of All".
All this success culminated in Watley winning
the "Best New Artist" award at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards.
Her follow up album "Larger Than Life"
was also a smash hit.
Where has she been since?
In 1990, Watley found time to produce a
fitness video titled "Dance To Fitness" that went on to sell millions of
copies.
In 1991, Watley secretly married her producer
Andre Cymone. Watley initially kept it a secret according to the
wishes of Cymone. At this same time, Watley recorded her third album
"Affairs of the Heart."
The album did not do as well as the first
two albums because it moved away from Watley's usually dance rhythms.
During this time Watley gave birth to two children and spent the next few
years caring for her young children.
In early 1995, Jody filed for a divorce
from Andre and embarked on launching her own label that she named Avitone
Records. She released yet another album that was a commercial flop.
In the closing months of 1995, Watley decided
to take a break from music and try stage acting. She was cast as "Rizzo"
in the six week long Broadway production of Grease. She won rave
reviews for her performance from critics and audiences.
In 1997, Watley was determined yet again
to make another commercial comeback and recorded the album "Flower," which
was to be carried under the Atlantic label. Singles "Off The Hook"
and "If I'm Not In Love" both hit No.1 on the Billboard Dance Charts. Unfortunately
the album "Flower" was released only in Europe and Asia.
In 1999, Destiny's Child recorded the single
"Sweet Sixteen" that was written by Watley. Although her streak of
bad luck in the 1990's, Watley is once again in the studio recording her
own flavor of music. |
