| Whatever Happened To Athlete Bo Jackson?
Born on November 30, 1962, Vincent Edward
Jackson was born in Bessemer, Alabama. He was the eighth of Florence
Jackson Bond's ten children and was named after her favorite television
actor, Vince Edwards, who portrayed Dr. Ben Casey.
Vincent earned the nickname "Bo" when he
was a child because his family thought that he was as wild as a "boarhog."
Jackson was the first selection of the
1986 NFL draft by theTampa Bay Buccaneers. But Jackson declined their
five-year offer that was worth a reported $7.6 million.
"My first love is baseball," he said, "and
it has always been a dream of mine to be a major league player."
The Kansas City Royals made Jackson the
4th pick in the 1986 Baseball draft and after spending only 53 games in
the minor leagues, he made his major league debut on September 2, 1986.
He had a tremendous career playing baseball
for the Kansas City Royals and football for the Los Angeles Raiders from
1987-1991. Jackson was the first athlete to play in the All-Star
game of two major sports.
On January 13, 1991, Jackson suffered an
serious hip injury and played his last professional football game.
Although the injury led to a hip-replacement surgery in 1992, Jackson made
a triumphant return to baseball before retiring from professional sports.
Once Jackson accepted that his career was
over, he went back to Auburn University in 1995 and completed a Bachelor
of Science degree, fulfilling a promise that he has made to his mother
before she died of cancer in 1992.
After completing his degree, Jackson opened
a motorcycle shop just outside of Chicago and also went into a partnership
with basketball ball star Charles Barkley for a restaurant.
Jackson also did a bit of acting doing
a small role in the 1996 movie "The Chamber." |
