| Whatever Happened To Singer Belinda
Carlisle?
Belinda Carlisle was born on August 17,
1958 as Belinda Jo Kerzcheski Carlisle in Hollywood, California.
Her father was a carpenter, and her mother a seamstress. She was
the eldest of seven children and went through many problems when she was
in high school. She had a lot of problems with her weight, and was
nicknamed "Ber-limpa." An interesting tidbit about Belinda was that
she was the first girl to play on a boys basketball team in California.
She was a tomboy for most of her high school
life. Towards the end of high school, she changed her image and figure
and was part of the cheerleading team.
Once completed high school, Carlisle left
her home and got involved with the L.A. punk scene. She got into
drugs, and was discovered by an L.A. punk band called "The Germs."
In 1978 she started her own band with two other girls called "The Misfits."
A year later they changed their name to the "The Go-Go's," and
also added two more band members.
In the beginning, the band did not do that
well, but in 1981 when they released their first album "Beauty and the
Beat," it did quite well.
In 1982 they were nominated for a Grammy
for their second album called, "Vacation." The band was doing great
but not all was what it seemed. The members of the band were heavily
involved in drugs. Carlisle admitted to taking every drug on the
planet.
Carlisle also came to realize the band
was not what they once were, and she then decided to split up from "The
Go-Go's, and went to a rehabilitation center and quit doing drugs.
In 1986, she married Morgan Mason who was
an assistant to President Ronald Reagan. In 1987, she came out with the
album, "Heaven on Earth," which was a great success.
Carlisle had succeeded from being a drug
addict to solo superstar. During the same time, three of her other
songs were also doing well on the charts. "I Get Weak, Circle in
the Sand, and I Feel Free." She came out with another album
in 1989 called "Runaway Horses," which did not do as well as "Heaven On
Earth," and that is when Carlisle's appeal started to diminish in the U.S.
Belinda then got involved in PETA (People
for Ethical Treatment of Animals). She became quite involved in this
cause and did a lot of campaigning. In 1992, she gave birth
to a baby boy, James Duke Mason.
In 1993, she was involved in the AIDS movement.
Also during this time, she recorded an album in 1991 called "Live Your
Life Be Free." It did not do well in the U.S., but did well in other
countries.
Carlisle then moved to France in 1993 after
coming out with a fifth solo album which also did not do well on the charts.
She then moved to the UK.
She also did many Go-Go reunions throughout
the 1990's. In 2001, Carlisle once again garnered attention when
she agreed to pose in Playboy magazine.
Recently she released her solo album called
Collection in 2002, and she has been touring the United States. |
