In Japan, the number four is considered to be unlucky because the Japanese word for four sounds very similar to the word death.

By Miss malice 386 Days AgoIt is in Japan. Japan has two words for 4, Shi and Yon Shi is a homophone for "death". Also 9, Kyu, when pronounced Ku, is a homophone for "suffering". And the number 7 also has two names, Shichi and Nana.
By Anonymous 386 Days AgoI work in China frequently, and they view the number 4 the same way we would view the number 13, because it is the same word as death, just a different tone.
By Anonymous 386 Days AgoIts also unlucky in Korea, and China. Its considered SO unlucky, that elevators in Korea, China and Japan usually have the letter "F" instead of the number "4".
By love__jack__sparrow 386 Days Agoactually, it's in CHINA not JAPANESE. Well, all chinese (including cantonese - HONG KONG PEOPLE) consider the number four unlucky because the number four is pronounced "S?" and death is pronounced "Si" the difference is the little tone over the 'I' and if anybody would like to argue with me, i'd just like to let them know, i'm chinese :) oh and in china they don't have a fourth floor coz it's considered so unlucky. it goes;; 1, 2, 3 , 5, 6, etc. lol. xx
By gw 386 Days AgoActually this would happen in any Asian country that shares the same counting system. Korea China Japan all share a similar counting system where the sound for four would be the same and not just in China. Korea for example has two counting systems one with its origins in China.
