In ancient Rome, lead poisoning was a prevalent disease amongst the wealthy because of their extensive use of lead. Many Roman women died because of lead poisoning caused by the use of make-up that contained lead.

By Rob 386 Days AgoThey also used lead for plumbing purposes, so there's speculation this lead to widespread lead poisoning and the decline of Rome. The chemical symbol for lead is Pb, derived from the Latin word for it, plumbum. This is where the word "plumbing" comes from!
