Also before, there was another national anthem of Australia, "Waltzing Matilda", in fact Australia might make it their National Anthem again.

In regards to the previous comment, "Waltzing Mathilda" never was and will probably never be Australia's national anthem as it is about a sheep-stealer who commits suicide rather than be arrested.

Australia only ever had one other national anthem, that was 'God save the Queen (King)', that was used up until a plebicite in the 1970's referendum, where Australia's population voted for 'Advance Australia Fair' as the anthem, only slightly more popular than 'Waltzing Matilda' (which was never Australia's national anthem, only a sentimental favourite). The Australian flag and anthem were only readily promoted in schools and government in the 1970's; up until then the Union Jack was issued to schools (even though the Australian flag has existed since approx. 1902) and 'God save the Queen (King)' was the preferred national anthem. (PS - I am Aussie and proud of it!)

Waltzing Matilda was NEVER our national anthem! Before Advance Australia Fair was officially adopted, it was God Save the Queen.

The comment made by Ash is incorrect. Waltzing Matilda was never Australia's National Anthem. Australia's original anthem was the British "God Save the Queen". Many Australians wanted a more original anthem so a nation wide competition was formulated for people to send in versions of a new anthem. The competition wasn't much of a success as it came down to "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" or just leaving it as "God Save the Queen". "Waltzing Matilda" may be a popular song among Australians but it would be a poor choice as an anthem as it only reinforces our "country founded on convicts" stereotypes. "Advance Australia Fair" was the winner and is unlikely to be changed anytime soon.
